Signs your blood sugar is all out of whack

Is your blood sugar out of whack

One of the big topics in my Nutrition Program, is keeping blood sugar stable. Why is this so important?

When we eat foods that spike blood sugar (high-glycemic foods), the sugar from these foods gets digested quickly, meaning it gets into the blood stream fast. What happens next is a surge of insulin is triggered, which causes blood sugar to drop below normal levels (hypoglycemic). This is followed by the release of stress hormones in order to bring blood sugar levels back up to normal.

Repeating this viscous cycle over and over may eventually lead to the onset of disease, for example Type 2 Diabetes.

But let’s say you don’t have diabetes… would you even notice the effects of spiking blood sugar? Here are some of the signs you may have a problem:

  • Uncontrollable hunger (especially in the afternoon)
  • Super sleepy… could kill for a nap (again, especially in the afternoon)
  • Not sleeping well at night
  • No matter what you do, the weight will not come off
  • Carrying the weight around the middle
  • Acne… and you thought you were too old for that!
  • You are moody as hell sometimes… probably because you haven’t eaten in awhile, and maybe don’t realize how long it’s been since you last ate
  • Looking for your next fix either from a vending machine, the local Starbucks or Timmies, or whatever delectable snack you can get your hands on
  • Just feeling crappy, and you don’t know why

The biggest culprit to spiking blood sugar comes from typical foods such as bread, rice, potatoes, baked goods, and sugary sweets.

To help you out, here is a chart that gives an idea of some of the foods that keep blood sugar stable and biggest offenders.

Glycemic Chart
Seriously… pretty much every boxed cereal is on the “choose least often” list. The same is goes for candy, pop, cake, fruit roll-ups, and all processed treats. This chart is just a sample.

If it came from the earth, it will most likely be the best option. It’s when we take things like a potato, over grow it, and then bake them and add all the toppings that we push things over the edge.
